Lesbos - Greece

From Corfu, I went to Lesbos Island. After a quick visit of the capital, Mytiline, which is not very interesting maybe since it is not very touristic, I went to Skala Eressou…

It takes about 2h30 by car, across the mountains, to get there. The road is sinuous and the landscape is very imposing. The little village is charming and is worth the trip. The main street is in fact a seaside promenade offering beautiful restaurants, bars and coffee shops. To visit the many other bars and restaurants on this street you must make a detour and cross over a little bridge. Many lesbian couples own the village’s businesses. Although the large majority of the population is female, you will also find straight couples and families who have decided to make this island their home. This is truly a lesbian’s paradise, a place where they can feel comfortable and where they are not in the shadow of the seaside resorts primarily built for gay men. The beach measures 2 kilometers long and is divided into 3 psychological separations; from the village it’s obviously the lesbian part of the beach, followed by the naturist part.

There is also a portion that is reserved for everyone else. I hadn’t understood until this point in time that lesbians have always lived in an environment more or less made for gay men. Although they usually create a little environment of their own, they are always surrounded by a world that is not to their image. Having seen these women live side by side and spoken to many of the residents, I now understand the importance of this place and the necessity to develop others.

The gay men are welcomed to this island, but you do need to understand that this place is their home and not yours. I would rather recommend you visit the Molyvos village located on the opposite side of Skala Eressou. This village is a large seaside resort with all of the services and with many gay bars. Many excursions are available; come visit its very popular petrified forest, its deserted beaches and its little typical villages.

Bon Voyage!
